"Goliath Heron"

Hectorspruit, ZA

Unlike the norm in the Kruger Park, it was a very gray day. Lighting is much easier but I had no chance to even think about catching birds in flight.

Nice pic Aart. Great to have the two birds in the frame together. I have never seen more than one at a time.

Hi James,
They were a bit far for good images but I enjoyed the sight of the breeding pair at the nest. I fish eagle came to investigate and you can imagine the aggressiveness from both parents.

Well done Art, they look very similar to the Reddish Egrets found in the south of the United States.

Thank you for the comments, much appreciated. I could not find any references to this bird outside Africa. I mentioned the almost violent reaction of the herons to the vicinity of an African Fish-Eagle. In the book I looked at they mentioned " Susceptible to kleptoparasitism by African Fish-Eagle" I have no idea what this is.

Thank you Rick, with your expertise in bird-photography I think you would have had a whale of a time in South Africa. I found the meaning for " Susceptible to kleptoparasitism by African Fish-Eagle". It refers to the stealing food instead of catching it him self.

Nice shots! Looks like Lake Panic? Goliaths are HUGE when you actually see them up close.
