"Some big ones & little ones....."

Mississauga, CA

A young Red-tailed Hawk sat himself over some doves & pigeons waiting for an opportunity, however he was not successful in capturing a meal.

First 2 shots full frame, some cloning done to remove distracting twigs, also a bit of Gaussian blur was added to background. 3rd shot is a square crop from a portrait mode shot.
All shots with my usual set up, D300 + Nikkor 600mm VR + 1.4TC

ISO400, f/7.1, 1/1000sec, spot

ISO400, f/7.1, 1/500sec, spot

ISO400, f/7.2, 1/320sec, spot

A favourite bird of mine to photograph, the House Finch. A fairly common bird, not too spectacular in appearance, but I love their feathering and how the camera and lens capture the details in their feathers. Both of these are virtually out of camera with little post processing other than downsizing & sharpening for posting.

Male House Finch, this particular male had very intense red plumage compared to the others: ISO400, f/7.1, 1/250sec, spot

And the female House Finch: ISO400, f/7.1, 1/500sec, spot

As always, thanks for stopping by to take a look.

The first is a beautiful red-tail portrait Richard. As for the house finches, I'd take the male on the female's perch.

Hi Jim and thanks. The hawk was quite approachable. The square crop close-up was actually from a shot that only had 2/3's of the bird in the image. I could walk right under him where he was perched in the tree. 2 others were flying around in the area as well.

Thank you Aart, the gear (and especially the acquisition of the 600mm VR lens) has helped significantly, it is an absolutely amazing piece of engineering. However, learning how to tweak the finest quality images from the equipment you own takes some experimentation in post processing. We've all seen some amazing images taken with all makes of lenses and focal lengths costing in the $1200 (+ or - $200) range, and I've been particularly impressed with the Nikkor 300mm f/4 (even with the 1.7TC) and the 150 to 500 Sigma zoom lens images posted here.

I'd second Aart's comments. These are all great, but I particularly like #3. The detail is terrific.

I've rented a 600 mm and it's supposed to arrive Thursday. I've never used one, and I'm really looking forward to trying it out. The sage grouse should be starting to strut, and then we are going into Yellowstone for a couple of days. (With my luck it'll probably do nothing but snow and blow while I have the lens.)

Love the finches. Both of them. Very nicely presented. I have yet to capture a good photograph of one. Need to work on that. Indeed, the feathering is pleasing to the eye.
