"kestrel in the vineyard..."
Thu 14-Feb-13 01:43 AM by Jim Pearce

Grimsby, CA

While I was waiting for the snowy owl, two kestrels flew into the vineyard. This guy was so busy grooming and coughing up a pellet that he let me get fairly close. D300 w/ 500 f4 AF-S & TC-14E, 1/1000 f7.1 ISO 320.

I've watched dozens of kestrels fly before I got the shot over the years. It was great to get nearly as close as I wanted to for a change!

I would normally prefer fill flash for smaller birds, but this light was perfect for revealing all of the colour and detail.

feast or famine: I went from having no kestrel shots to having a couple dozen in different postures, albeit on a metal pole. Now for that Least Bittern!

Nice, clean background, spectacular lighting, almost looks like studio lighting - really brought out the colours and maintained the ability to show texture in the feathering.

Around the corner from the snowy owl a farmer with a sense of humour put up a pair of plastic owls. On hearing reports from passing cars not a few photographers have rushed off to shoot these other owls.
