I wouldn't want to be thought of as the only obsessive here! Great detail, the light looks pretty warm in the second shot. I saw the woodpecker on your LCD, and it looks the same here. Nice feather detail on the merganser. The junco is perfect.

These are all very nice Dave. I would be happy with any of them. I do understand where you are coming from though, I do the same thing with the Eagle images every year. Seems I am always looking for the one that makes you sit back and just say WOW. Something different you know. I have not got that yet this year. #2 is pretty sweet!

A fine set Dave, well done. The lack of noise & dynamic range of the D3S really shows through on these.
To me, the Downy looks a little cool, I picture the whites as being somewhat warmer.

thank you Richard. As for the Downy. I have a big problem with WB. If only I could remember what the bird actually looks like. I always adjust WB in Lightroom and I think I adjusted it to make the belly feathers white. I am going to have to take a closer look the next time he comes to the feeder

Hey Dave, I tend to agree with Richard on the WB. I also think the blue channel was a little heavy. Here is that image adjusted in LR 4 to what I think seems correct, hope you don't mind.

If you have Lightroom 4:

+5 temp
+9 tint
-5 blacks

Tone Curve
+ 15

Color Blue:
- 30 saturation
+ 15 Luminance

Before:

After:

"it's tough getting detail on both the black and white feathers"

Try this:

Using the brush tool in LR select only the black, you may have to try different size brushes to get this but make sure it is only the black that is selected. Make sure to check the box that says "show selected mask overlay" so you know where you are brushing. Once done I used these settings for the brush adjustments.

Exposure +40
Contrast -60
Highlights +60
Clarity +60
Sharpness +25

Now it took these setting with this small web image your might be slightly different with the full raw.
