"angel of the vineyard..."
Sun 13-Jan-13 01:55 AM by Jim Pearce

Grimsby, CA

The first two shots are from an odd reverse takeoff from the vineyard. The third shot is the snowy returning to his roost.

I only got out the 500 and tripod to catch him perching on that bale of hay- but since I had it out I thought I might get lucky in the vineyard. And yes, your 600mm with the D3s would have done a better job, escpecially with a TC-17E. Even at ISO 320 the D300's DR is really stretched here.

Dave and I had the conversation about exposure control on site. I just spot metered and matched the matrix to the spot using negative comp and shot in aperture priority.

Very nice series Jim

Love #3 In California hawks are all over in the vineyards...the food source for them there is huge...rabbits, ground squirrels, mice etc. I saw owls only a couple times but that was very early in the morning in the headlights of my car.

I've read the crushing power of Snow Owls is in the hundreds of pounds ... those claws have some amazing strength.

As I was a little rusty I was pleased just to nail the focus on a flying bird at 700mm.

Going to 1200 on the horizontal was just a matter of changing my habit - which as you know is something tend to struggle with.

Got to love #3 Jim, excellent range in the white tones. Remarkable how you captured how much movement they have in all their feathers to contol the flight/stall patterns.

Also pleased you're posting somewhat larger images for us now so we can appreciate the details.
