"Northern Harrier in Western Washington"
Sun 06-Jan-13 04:11 AM by Photosage

Bellingham, WA, US

These shots were taken on the Sammish Flats in Western Washington State. I had stopped my pickup to turn around and just happened to glance over and see her standing there intently studying the ground - she was probably 100' or so away. She didn't really pay any attention to me (except for the one shot where she is eyeing me) even when I moved the truck ahead to try and get shots free of interfering weeds. She was very cooperative, most Harriers I see don't stick around very long. I shot these with a D300, a VR 500mm lens, ISO 400, @f7.1

Thanks for looking, Ron

Ron-

I've noticed that our Western Washington birds are VERY polite.

The shots are great. I smiled when I saw the cocked head. You must have been a fascinating subject.

Thanks for your comments Dan. I've had some good luck with our birds but there are some that haven't gotten the word. In other photos of this bird I could see blood on her talons, and her crop seemed a little full, so she may have been a little more relaxed having had a recent meal.

I once was trying to photograph a Great Horned Owl, facing away from me. When he turned around, there was a tail hanging from his mouth. EESH.

Outstanding images of a hard to get close to bird,Ron. Saw a "Grey Ghost" today but he didn't come close enough to put the lens on him.

I have a question on #3 for anybody.

In the upper green corner, the grass makes some shadows, or double exposures, or whatever you call it.

I have some specific shots, where this happens and I would like to correct it.

It occurred to me, that perhaps I needed just a little more shutter speed. Is this because of vibration?

Thank you very much for responding, Ian. In some of my other photos of her she does appear to have blood on her talons so she may have eaten recently. Reward or no, I thank her for being such a cooperative subject.

Beautiful series Ron

I agree about Harriers not being very cooperative...I've seen them all over the country and they're tough to get close too...seems to be a good year though for NIkon photographers and these birds.

Thank you Peter. I find it rather interesting that most of the time they seem very aware and want nothing to do with us- all you can get is a butt shot. But occasionally they seem so absorbed in what they are doing that they are unconcerned about our presence. This one was very close, under 100 feet, and stayed for 15 minutes. I even started the truck up and inched it forward a couple of times and she didn't seem to care. Go figure.
