"Rare for our area . . . "
Fri 04-Jan-13 02:33 PM by cockers

Plover, US

We had an unusual visitor stop by our cabin this past weekend and afforded me only a very brief encounter. Beautiful male Red Bellied Woodpecker out and about on a -3 degree F day.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice Al, I like the second simply because it shows more details of its wing feather patterns.

I also managed to come across one during my last outing (images posted a couple of days a go) - all I got some some shots of the back of its head!! Also heard, but didn't see, a Pileated. Going to have to go back and bring a large thermos of coffee and wait!

Thanks Richard -

I would have preferred using the 500P but there was no time to switch lenses. Saw this fellow out the back window of our cabin working through the hardwood and had to go with what was on the camera.

We also had a Pileated in the area but not close enough.

Both are well captured Al, I prefer #1 even though I don't see the whole bird. It's the view I see most often. I never get the full bird!

Thanks Pakku - their heads are a bit of an orangish red color and the early morning light makes them appear a bit warmer or more orange. As to the red belly name - not sure as it's not readily apparent.

Very nice Al!! It is always special when you capture a bird that is outside of its normal range. Wow! you have definitely been working under brutal conditions! Thanks for sharing!

Nice shots Al, especially if you were standing outside in -3 degree temps!

I've been chasing woodpeckers down here in Texas, and getting a full shot is impressive - they are elusive.

Love the light colours and warm feel. You definitely did him justice!
