"sample of winter pics from Pacific Northcoast"
Wed 26-Dec-12 06:51 AM by qanik

I see many pics from warmer climes, thought should give a bit of representation from our northern winter environment - all shot in the month of this Dec, it has snowed almost every day so far and winter light not the best

Wow! These are great shots Michael!! You deserve significant "props" for battling the elements to capture these images. The shot of the GBHs is very different from any I have previously seen. I really like the eagle on the salmon and the second snowy owl. All are great shots!

thanks Vaughn ,though am not battling the elements, here you have to co exist so either pulling prawn traps on the ocean or snowshoeing behind our home you dress appropriate and learn to adapt, winter for the 4 months is something you learn to embrace or you move south

Very nice shots Michael!
My favorites are the close up of the White-winged crossbill male, and the Snowy Owl in flight. I'm a sucker for great BIF! But doing it with a 500mm lens, that takes skill!
We only see less than a dozen of the Pine Siskins at a time and only if there is an irruption - this year it's on the West side of the Rockies, and we've been seeing them since November .... a sure sign that it's a hard winter North and in the mountains!
Thanks for sharing!

Marc many thanks for your kind comments, I looked at your pics and immediately got a bit of climate envy, anyways that is not a white winged crossbill. Crossbills are much smaller with pointed overlapping beaks and their females are distinctive ,this is a pine grosbeak and we have an inudation of them this year much to my joy since they are so pretty on the white snow background . Enclosed are some comparison pics I took last spring as well as another pine grosbeak and female shot today

Very nice winter set Michael - I especially like the White-winged Crossbill. Definitely shows the capabilities of the D800 to render detail. The Snowy on the post is excellent as well.

Beautiful Snowy Owls, especially with the light you had available. Love the eagle w/salmon shot as well.

Would love to see a Snowy, but the 4 years I spent in Quebec were enough cold for me!

Excellent set Michael, but as someone who has somewhat of an obsession for capturing feather detail, my favourite is your first grosbeak shot. I might try bumping the whites up a bit in curves/levels and possibly play with an "S" curve in curves to punch up the contrast.

Jim many thanks, the problem with the owls as everywhere it seems in the province is that they are starving to death, 4 have been brought into the wildlife shelter here in our town so far, very emaciated and all have died - you can't tell with all those fluffy feathers - no mice, go figure there are almost no mice on the farms or fields, the farmers are even commenting on it, none even in the feed stores or other such bldgs. etc , all very strange the wrong year to be an owl around here
