These were taken last weekend at Port Aransas and Mustang Island state park, Texas. The weather was beautiful: 80F and no sign of winter. People were out fishing so I was able to get pretty close to the birds.
Port Aransas and Mustang Island are good spots for photographing birds from close range: these birds usually hang out near fishermen so they're used to being fairly close to people. At least close enough to use the 70-200 on a small sensor with 1.6 crop factor.
Once I drive out onto Padre Island, birds are far more shy so the 70-200 hardly gives me any usable shots (other than environmental shots).
