"Northern Cardinal - feeding on European spindle tree"

Mississauga, CA

While waiting for the Buffleheads to get closer (posted earlier), this male Northern Cardinal was feeding on the berries of a European spindle tree on the other side of the pond.

D300 + Nikkor 600mm VR + 1.4TC; ISO400, f/7.1, 1/800sec, -0.3EV, spot

As usual, a superb shot Richard. Given the gear you were using. How far away from the subject were you to get that shot?....Scotty.

Thanks Scotty, can't remember for sure and I'm terrible as estimating distance outdoors. This is approx 50% crop of the original frame, I'm guessing 40-50ft (12 to 15m).

Wish it was a little less cluttered, but this was just a grab shot while I was waiting for other action.

I take it you mean the spindle is from the other side of the pond - you didn't actually see a cardinal in Europe did you?

That's funny Alex! Actually I was sitting on this side of the pond shooting the bird on the other side of the pond on a tree that came from across the pond.

Very kind of you Al. I don't have enough words to extol the performance and quality of this lens along with the matching 1.4TC.

The LLT, well I guess I just chalk that up to lots of practice and hard self critiquing.

Excellent image, Richard-it shows not only the bird's nice colors but it's feeding habits as well.
