"HELP ME IDENTIFY THIS BIRD"
Mon 20-Aug-12 11:59 PM by largebore

The photo is not so great I am just trying to id the bird.

This guy or gal hangs out at my birdfeeder.

I have ruled out a female House Finch and think it is a Sparrow.
However the markings do not match any Sparrows I have found that feed at feeders .

Any sharp eyed birders know what it is ?

Could be a Breeding Chipping Sparrow - "a small gray-breasted sparrow with a bright rufous cap, a black line through the eye and a white line over it".

That is what I identified it as, but all of the information that I have indicates that it does not feed at bird feeders and i have a bunch of them....so I figured it could not be.. but frankly I am very much a novice at this...

I agree, BTW my Chipping Sparrows do eat ay my feeders too. In mu case they breed locally (around the yard somewhere). I like the small image but the larger version would have been helped by a higher shutter speed than 1/160 if you can get it. In an ideal world I am trying to get 1/800 second on a shot like this or at least 1/500, but I realize this is not an ideal world

The reason for this is small birds head movement is typically very very fast and so you can get a shot where the body of the bird is sharp but the head (and certainly the bill) on a feeding bird is blurred. Hope this helps,

Best regards, SteveK
