"Backlit Bearded Tits"
Sun 03-Jun-12 01:40 PM by Gert van der Kolk

Rotterdam, NL

The juvenile bearded tits are already on their own. These were in a flock of about ten, restlessly swarming the reeds and willows, feeding on both insects and seeds.

D800, 500/4 VR + TC17EII, Isoeq 320, 1/4000, f/7.1, -1,0 EV

They make a beautiful bell-like sound and are often heared long before seen. This flock fed for several minutes on the same spot of reed, allowing me to make some backlit pics.

D800, 500/4 VR + TC17EII, Isoeq 320, 1/2000, f/7.1, -1,0 EV

Their juvenile appearance is quite different from the adult (though with the same coloration); the black spot around the eyes has disappeared when adult.

Looking forward to read your thoughts / comments!

Gert, these are gorgeous! I love backlighting, or "rim light" and #2 is outstanding. I like the adult shot, too. A beautiful bird!

He Betty, Nice to hear from you! Glad you like them. The one in normal light is a youngster too, btw.

Here's an adult male from the gallery:

Well I like them because they're creative and not just another "bird book" image or document. This makes them much more intriguing to me as it conveys something about the bird but also the photographer.
I don't want to come across as sanctimonious above because I like a good image of a bird on a stick as well; I'm just say'n......

Very nice Gert, I'm going to go against the grain here a little as I personally really like #1. I can imagine this one blown up to a produce a large print. The silhouettes of the birds really stand on the grass stems out and has a nice "graphic" feel to it.

Thanks Richard, Glad you like that pic. Technically the harder one to make, to get the reflections right in the composition.

Thanks Brian, they're one of my favourite species to shoot. Industrious little fellows, working very hard for a few calories.
