"Great Crested Flycatcher"
Sat 26-May-12 12:36 AM by Dubes

Mississauga, CA

After hearing and getting quick glimpses of them last weekend, I returned today and waited patiently in the same area of the park. After about a 30 minute wait, a pair showed up and posed for me on a few different perches. Sun was bright but not overly high (around 9:00 am)

Thanks Jim, last weekend was the first time I'd seen these birds - love the warm olive yellow colour of their belly feathers.

Thanks Scotty, they're pretty skittish and difficult to approach. Took about 45 minutes for them to get somewhat used to me being around.

Another beauty series Richard. Love the pose in #2. Did you push up the saturation a bit for #3? On my monitor the greens look just a tad over the top -- or is that just the colour of spring leafing out coming through?

I'm off to Algonquin tomorrow to see if I can capture some cinnamon- coloured moose calves. Wish me luck. (Although I think I need a tad more talent to capture the "luck" that seems to follow you.)

Take care,
CK

Hi Chuck and thanks, they look fairly calm on my monitor (calibrated IPS monitor), I probably boosted saturation no more than 5 points from the standard profile setting in Capture NX.

Good luck with your moose hunt, looking forawrd to seeing some shots.

Thanks for the reply Richard. My monitor hasn't been calibrated in awhile so that's probably the reason.

As for the moose today... we saw only 3, all fairly skittish and they did not stay around long. Alas no cinnamon-coloured calves and no keepers. Still a pretty great day in my opinion.
Take care,
CK

Thanks Greg and good to here from you. Point Pelee following week wasn't very productive for me. Only ended up with a few shots after almost 2 days there; I've come home with more shots after a 1/2 day in a local park vs. 2 days there!

The lens does produce a nice bokeh on distant objects, even with a TC mounted.

Beautiful set of images, Richard! #2 of course!

I have some settling in here for the summer and this motivates me to give it a try although I have to do it in some unfamiliar places. Never shot one either.

Neil, thanks. Good luck in your hunt, this was a relatively new area for me as well. As mentioned I came across them a couple of days prior and lucked out on my return. These were realtively shy and tended to stay high in the trees most of the time.
