"Branch Hugger"

Rolling Hills, US

I was able to get up pretty close to this hummer this past weekend. The lighting was a little tough because the hummer was in filtered light while the background was catching the full light of the late afternoon sun.

Great shot!, love the lighting and pose. Nice to see an image that the humming bird is not in flight for a change.

Hi Steve...I am glad you like the image. I gave up trying to catch hummers in flight. Almost all of the hummer images in my gallery are not-in-flight shots. It is still a challenge to get them to land in a natural spot, away from a feeder. They still don't sit still very long.

Thanks for commenting.

Great shot Barry! Only 1/80 of a second. I am amazed at the sharpness. These guys rarely stand still long enough for such a slow shutter speed.

Thanks Steve. They tend to rotate their heads back and forth, with a momentary pause after each turn. If you time it just right, you can capture their brief pause. I've even got a couple of sharp shots at 1/20 of a second, but the odds of a good shot drop way off at that speed.

Hi Barry, beautiful capture and I like the background. It's a nice contrast and really sets the bird off. Nice and sharp, catch light and all.

Hi Pakku....this is an adult hummer. It was a bit windy when this was taken, and hummers occasionally puff up their feathers, for a little more warmth I suppose.

Thanks for the nice comment.
