"sync. an off camera flash with a coolpix 800?"

bobcaygeon, CA

I received a Coolpix 800 for Christmas (lucky me) and I'm trying to use the built in flash to trigger my Vivitar 285's, with slave units, as there is no external p.c. connector on the camera. I made a reflector that fits in front of the camera flash and although the 285's do flash when the camera flash goes off, they seem to be out of sync. with the shutter - a totally under exposed image. The shutter speed is 1/30 (@f4.5), the auto flash setting. This camera could also use a cable or electronic shuter release. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.
