"Wireless flash question for D600"

US

Sorry to ask such a rookie question. I have a D600 and my flash is an SB600. I'm interested in setting up photos with a wireless flash. Will I be able to use the SB600 for this purpose? I've read quite a bit about this online, but I'm still baffled.

I appreciate any tips you can give me. Thanks!

Set your flash in camera to commander mode, set your SB600 as a slave/remote and fire away.

Thank you, I thought I read something about the SB600 not being compatible with Nikon CFS.

You were partly correct - the SB-600 cannot be used as a Commander to control other remote Speedlights, but it can be used as a Remote itself.

Great. So the on-board flash on my D600 can be used as the commander. right?

I find the whole process of one flash controlling others fascinating and wanted a better understanding, so bought Matt Hagen's "The Nikon Creative Lighting System... ". It's a great resource on how the CLS system works with detailed instructions on how to use the different flashes, including the SB-600.

On a related note, my boxer is hating me now when I get out the camera.

Hi Texaz,

I use my D80's CLS commander mode to control two SB-600 speedlights off camera. It works very well as long as there is reasonable 'line of sight' from the camera's flash to the SB-600's. I can control the two speedlights as separate groups and set their power manually from the camera body. Awesome.
Your D600 is way more camera than my D80, so you should be able to do this easily.
Check out Darrell Young's excellent tutorial on his blog here:

good luck,
Hauke
