"Not sure where to put this... flash photography with a manual lens"
Sun 11-Nov-12 12:43 AM by JBD90

I have a Kiron 105mm macro lens that works fine with my Sunpak ringlight with a Nikon module. When I try to use my flip up flash on my D90 or my Mount my Nissin Di622 I get an error code r 18 and the flash symbol just blinks in the upper left corner of the settings screen. I went to E2 and turned off TTL and still nothing. The camera does not function.
I should be able to set the shutter speed to 30-250 and my f stop on my lens but the camera will not function never mind fire the flash. Do any of you use manual lenses with the camera's built in flash. Thanks JBD90

I can only comment on one thing - r18 is not an error code - it merely tells you how many shots you can store in the buffer before they are written to the card. It has nothing to do with the flash issue you are talking about.

Thanks for that. I wrote it in my user manual. I think someone told me that when I first got my D90 and long since forgot. I hope I will not forget again. Now I am bummed because I have no clue as to why the camera does not fire the flip up flash with a manual lens. JBD90

I'm going to guess it has to do with focus. The camera may think the lens is not focused, since it is not providing focus info. Have you tried putting the D90 body on Manual focus?

Yes, when I mount a manual lens I set the lever to manual and the setting wheel to manual as well. This works with my SunPac ring light with my manual macro lens. It just does not work with a TTL flash or the built in flash. JB

when you use non CPU lenses on a D90 do you have to tell the camera the focal length - if not don't you have to set the flash to manual using the menus?

On my old D50 I could only use a manual lens on manual flash and had to set the built in flash to manual. (That is all from memory as I don't use the D50 anymore - my wife has it and I can't check as she is currently on a plane with said camera)
