"D3200 and SB800 problem - please help!"

DK

Hello everybody

I have recently bought a Nikon D3200 as my first DSLR, and I am very very happy with it. I use a Tamron Di II 18-270 f/3.5-6.3 VC PZD NI lens. I am starting to carry it around everywhere, and I love how good the pictures turn out.. How did I ever live without a DSLR?

My father had a spare SB800 flash, so now I also got a very nice flash to use with my camera - however;
It does not seem to register properly with my D3200. As I understand it, it should be able to register how much I am zooming, but it seems that the flash is stuck at 14mm and it is displaying a "M" above "Zoom". However, even when I try to use the manual buttons to set the right mm on the SB800, nothing happens. Still stuck at 14mm.

Does anyone know of this issue? I have tried to reset the settings of the SB800, but it did no difference.
Am I missing something?

I really hope someone is able to help!

Best regards
Mikas

Hi Mikas,

Welcome to Nikonians!
It sounds like you have the diffuser dome on the flash or the wide angle flash adaptor down, it will keep the zoom set at 14mm and prevent it from changing.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Yep, I'd guess that the flip-down wide angle diffuser is, well, flipped down. It's flipped down over the front of the flash tube area.

If you don't have the SB800 manual you should be able to download it from the Nikon site. The menus aren't that intuitive to a new user.

Marty and Brian are both correct. The dome will set the flash to 14mm and the flip down diffuser will set the zoom to either 14mm or 17mm depending on the lens.

Enjoy your SB800. It's a great speedlight.
