"2 or 3 speedlights wired iTTL"
Fri 22-Jun-12 07:34 PM by Vlad_IT

New Tampa, US

Hi, all. I would like to ask a few questions.

Currently I have SB-910, SB-700, SB-600, SB-400, SC-17 and 10 ft flash sync cord (SC-27 or similar). Camera is D7000 with pop-up flash.

I just purchased a Stroboframe dual flash bracket. And if needed for macro i can get another SB-400

I would like to achieve the most flexibility without putting too much additional funds in this setup.

1. I need to be able to use two flashes for macro/close-up photography. Will SB-400 work as well as those flashes from R1C1 kit? Or I better off using my bigger speedlights?
2. Is there a cord like SC-17 but for two flashes?

3. I anticipate sometimes I will need more power, if the setup above will work for three Speedlights simultaneously?

The only solution I can visualize with my current set up is SB-700 off camera (on the bracket) on top of SC-17 and SC-27 run from connector of SC-17 directly into SB-910 on another side of the bracket.

But something tells me this setup won’t be iTTL.

Thanks you very much,
Vlad

Hi Vlad,

For i-TTL flash control, the maximum number of Speedlights that can be connected by wire to the camera is One. This number included the built in Speedlight.
You can use The built in Speedlight or your SB-910, or SB-700 in the camera hotshoe or connected via the SC-17, SC-28, or SC-29 TTL extension cords set in Commander mode to control the SB-910, SB-700, (set in Remote mode) or SBR-200's via CLS wireless flash control.
The SB-400 is a stand alone unit, and is not compatible with the CLS wireless flash control system. Therefore it can only be used by itself.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Ok. Thanks Marty.
I think I can work with the idea of one flash off camera as master and one as slave.
Best regards,
Vlad

Hi Vlad,

>1. I need to be able to use two flashes for macro/close-up
>photography. Will SB-400 work as well as those flashes from
>R1C1 kit?

No! The SB-400 is a stand alone Speedlight.

>Or I better off using my bigger speedlights?

Yes!

>2. Is there a cord like SC-17 but for two flashes?

Paramount adds a standard (non-TTL) hotshoe to an SC-28 for use with a Pocket Wizard Plus II, Plus III, or MultiMax. It will not support 2 Speedlights using i-TTL flash control.

>3. I anticipate sometimes I will need more power, if the setup
>above will work for three Speedlights simultaneously?

Using the CLS wireless flash control you can use 3 or more remote Speedlights set in up to 3 groups.

>The only solution I can visualize with my current set up is
>SB-700 off camera (on the bracket) on top of SC-17 and SC-27
>run from connector of SC-17 directly into SB-910 on another
>side of the bracket.

The SC-27 was designed to be used with Film cameras and only supports film TTL flash control.

>But something tells me this setup won’t be iTTL.

Yes!
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

The SC-29/27/17 hard wire all the connections from the camera body to its hotshoe, so I expect that the flash on the cord will have the features it has on the camera. The SC-27/17 have 2 ttl ports thar are only 3 wire and these should be the old film type TTL control.

So it is not possible to have more than one CLS flash controlled by the SC-17/27/29 cord.
