"Do I really need a flash trigger?"

92359, US

I shoot alot of portraits of models and misc friends / family. My lighting setup consists of the Bowens 750 monoblocks x 3. I have several umbrellas, octoboxes, etc... I had the tranceiver / transmiter from Calumet called Litelink. There not Pocket Wizards but they work nicely.

Now, here is my dilemma. One of my Litelink transmitters was stolen, thus I had one left. Of course I can't use them as a trigger flash so I have simply been using them as a continuous on status. I have kind of grown to like the ease of shooting faster wih continuous lite vs waiting for the lights to recycle.

Here is my question, I found two Litelink transmitters for $100. I am trying to justify if these are really worth getting or simply stay using the lights in a continuous on mode.

Thank You

Jim

If I understand you correctly you are using the modeling lights instead of the strobes.
If that is the case, you are not taking advantage of the additional lighting power (several orders of magnitude higher than the modeling lights) provided by the strobes. Depending on the ambinet light level the modeling lights may not be able to overpower the ambient resulting in White Balance issues.

Your Bowens 750's have optical slaves built in to each unit.
Just so you know you can add a hotshoe to PC adaptor and use a PC cord to connect the camera to one of your Bowens 750's which will fire the other two units if you put them in optical slave mode.
You can also use the pop up flash (in Manual flash mode) on your D7000 (with an SG-3IR if you don't want the built in flash to contibute to the exposure) to trigger all three of your Bowens 750's in optical slave mode.
The only drawback to using the optical slave is if others will be using flash near by.

Get the transmitters and take full advantage of the strobes that you paid for.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty
