I shoot sports and skateboarding. I was looking to get a better speedlight for nightime photo shoots for skating, and was looking at the Sunpak 555 and the SB-50. I know the Sunpak has a much higher GN, but which flash would be better for high shutter speed photography at night?Comments please.

I think you should go with power. Regardless of distance, I would think you would want to use a pretty small aperture to ensure sharp focus. Light fall-off will take care of background distraction.

The SB-50DX's a great little flash with all its bells and whistles but it is -- no matter how you look at it -- a little flash. You're going to need power for your sports (as you most likely will be shooting from a distance) so get a unit with a higher guide number.
That being said, my one and only flash is an SB-50DX that I use primarily (and infrequently) for close indoor shots. It does the job for me, but as I'm a landscape guy, flash isn't something I worry about religiously.
