"SB28 and Nikon Coolpix"

I am interested in buying either a Nikon 885 or maybe the new CoolPix 5000. Will my SB28 work with these? (Now I wish I had bought the SB28DX)

YES the SB-28 will work with the Coolpix cameras that have connectors for an external flash. The 885 doesn't have either a TTL connector or a hotshoe so you can't use it with any external flash. The 5000 will have a hotshoe, the 995/990 have a TTL connector.

These models have a separate flash metering "eye" rather than true TTL metering and they do not need the "DX" version Speedlights. The ONLY cameras that require a DX unit are the D1 models. The DX circuitry allows them to meter the flash during the monitor preflash cycle. Nobody but a D1 owner or someone who plans to get one should spend the extra money for the SB-28DX.

You won't find the Coolpix cameras to support many of the SB-28 features, however. Just the basic TTL mode. And that mode won't work when you mount an accessory lens since that blocks the flash sensor window. In that case, you have to use flash auto or manual flash settings.

Thank you very much for your response.
You are right the 885 does not have a hotshoe, and the 5000 does (which I am much more interested in). Could I use the SB28 as .. say a bounce flash for indoor shooting? so if I use the lens the 5000 comes with, I would be able to set the SB28 to TTL (not matrix?) and shoot however...?
