I can't believe it, just purchased SB 900 last night and went to use it today during a shoot. Pulled it out and dropped it before I even got to use it, the glass lens hit the corner of my camera and cracked the protective lens. I read that accidents are not covered by Nikon Warranty.... Any advice or how long takes to repair and what it will cost?
Digressing looking at your profile you have the top DX body and your lenses include 4 of the best available - UK new price for these items alone around £5,000. Maybe it is time to think about insuring your equipment in case something more expensive goes wrong.
Photography is a bit like archery. A technically better camera, lens or arrow may not hit the target as often as it could if the photographer or archer does not practice enough.
Do you have NPS status? If so you know the value. If not, and you shoot professionally, you should check on it.
Personally, I have had a number of repairs shipped to Melville... Although NPS provides for a replacement until the repair is complete, I have never made this request as the repairs have been lightning quick.
The longest I have had to wait for anything is 2 weeks, give or take a day.
Others may have had different results with NPS but I am super pleased.
Reading the other replies to this post tells me how lucky I have been. My SB900 dropped onto a hard road surface and shattered the red plastic AF-Assist illuminator cover in the first week of use. Although expecting a hefty repair bill the flash was fitted with a new cover and tested for other, internal damage by Nikon UK Kingston Repair centre without cost.
