i am shooting indoor sports and am allowed to use a flash. i want to try shooting with the flash off camera and had a couple questions:

1. Is there much of a benefit to having the flash off camera in poorly lit gyms?
2. Should I get a sc-28, or go sc-29 with the af-i light in it?
3. If the sc-28 is sufficient, and the af-i not really required, do the no name cords seen on e-bay work fine?
4. Would a diffuser help with the flash either on or off the camera? Those rubber dome things seem interesting..

Ill be using a d80 with sb600. For action ill be using my 80-200/2.8 af-d, and for groups/teams ill be using either my sigma 30/1.4 or sigma 18-50/2.8

in general it seems that it has to be fairly dark before the camera wont focus without af-i, and since the action shots are to be shot with af-c, i would imagine the sc-28 would meet my needs?

thanks!
