"Meters vs Feet"

Sunnyvale, US

I recently got a 5400 (love it except for the low light focusing - or lack thereof). When viewing shooting data in Nikon View the manual focus distance is shown in meters. Is there a way to have the distance shown in feet? (I can quickly deal with feet, but it takes some mental gymnastics for me to convert to meters - probably has to do with my age.) I have been unable to find any reference in the users manual or the list of preferences. Did I look too fast and miss it?

Thanks in advance for any help that may be offered.

You should find the settings in the main menu (screwdriver logo on the menu bar or first line, pushing the joystick to the right and "clicking"... You can change languages and choose from feet to meters among other things...

Just think of meters as yards which is close enough for government work.

It used to be that "close enough for government work" was a good thing. How time changes all things.

It's a messy and outdated system, but it seems to work OK for those who use it every day. Australia went metric in 1975 and I know I could never go back.

The real problems come from mixing systems - I don't know if it's urban myth or not, but one of the Mars probes crashed because one contractor was working in metric, one in imperial, and they got confused.

archivue,

Thanks for the reply, but there is no choice in the menu for units (meters, feet or otherwise). Language, date and 10 others, but not units. I cannot find any such choice in the Nikon View preferences either.

I guess I will just have to learn to deal with doing a mental conversion. I'm sure the more I deal with it the easier it will become.

Thanks to everybody who responded,
Richard Baker

I just had a thorough look to the 5400 manual... And you are right ! Incredible ! I expect it's a set that goes with language (I can't imagine french buyers dealing with feet... ).
Maybe it'll be corrected in a firmware... As the 5000 can manage raw files and not yet the 5400, I suppose there will be an upgrade at the PMA time... (Hope keeps one living )!
