A Common Problem? (S4000 hard to turn on and off)
I got a used S4000, which I almost gave up on before I finally took it into low light and got its LCD to light up using a fully charged battery (Nikon EN-EL10).
It works fine except that the Touch Screen doesn't respond sometimes. The main remaining problem is turning it off. I must put it into Preview mode to get the lens to eventually retract; then I must wait a couple of minutes for the idle camera to turn itself off due to lack of operation. (I guess I could just remove the battery after the lens retracts.)
Have you had similar problems with one of your Coolpix models? (If so, which one? And did you invent a fix for it?)
Thanks to all of you.

After trying several batteries in various states of charge, I concluded that this camera operates properly if any decent battery in it is freshly, fully charged. (Some batteries are better than others though.)
But if its battery becomes weak while it is turned on, one may need to put it into Preview mode so that after one minute, its lens will retract and then its battery pulled in order to turn this camera off.
(Does any one wish to discuss which batteries are equivalent to an EN-EL10?)
