"Coolpix recommendation for kid"

My 10 year old son is interested in photography and I want to give him his first camera so that he can take in a trip we are taking soon. I don't want to spend a lot of money as I am still not sure how much he will use it. Reviews for the cheaper coolpix in Amazon are very mix, 50% of people seem to have lots of troubles with them. I am leaning towards the L26. Any recommendations?
Thanks!!

Any of the L-series is a good starter camera for young photographers. After years of my daughter wanting one of her own, she was old enough and mature enough to get an L-22 for the Holidays.

Things that are good about the L-series. Some of them are cheap enough that you could buy two. They have enough modes (mostly Scene-based) to make it interesting and flexible for a young person experimenting with photo-taking, but convenient enough that they can press the shutter and get good results without too much forethought or learning. (We all know how much kids like to read manuals - the instant-instant gratification generation as I like to tease them).

Not-so-good things: Well, they're not so good for hobbyists or purists, but L-series and even the S-series have the typical P&S characteristics - shutter-lag, not-so-great IQ at higher ISO settings, not a deep control set.

Overall, it's not a bad camera for them to start with. What will be the challenge is to teach them a workflow - download & process. They will fill up the card(s), not cull for the keepers, then complain when they're out of space at a critical moment.

Thank you! I will try to go with one in the L series. Yes, the workflow worries me, as I think the first few weeks the cards will fill daily with pictures of everything he sees....hopefully he will soon develop a more critical eye! but it is fun to see the photography bug in him!
thanks again!
