"Camera automatically takes picture"

Coolpix 8700.....when I turn camera on the lens extends, the flash door opens and it takes a picture all by itself. I can't do anything with it at this point except turn it off........but, it just repeats when I turn it back on!

I would check the settings in the menu.

Could be the self-timer.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary.......icons of all the settings along the bottom, hourglass icon when processing the pic, then back to the bottom icons.

I wonder if it's an intermittent short to the shutter circuit when you power on the camera.

I couldn't hazard a guess about the short! If it's something that may need factory service, is that something that may cost so much it's probably better to just go get a new camera!? I realize it depends on what the problem is, but, I'm thinking service on this type of equipment is probably pretty pricey.........

Most appliance shops' bench fee to just diagnose is already a third to a half of the cost of a new Coolpix, so your suspicions about repair are right on...
