"Lens Hood for P7000"

Pietermaritzburg, ZA

I am often bothered by the absence of a lens hood especially when taking pictures backlit by the sun.

Just been having a look at the two part Bower 58mm "filter" holder. I was wondering if the first part of this device which extends about half the overall distance would make a good hood support or if someone had tried this? Does anyone know what thread (or bayonet) connects the two parts of the holder?

Many thanks.

I have the Bower two part system. The system consists of two adapters.. one long and one short. The short one attaches to the camera by removing the lens ring. You can add a 58mm lens hood (I use a Polaroid brand with bayonet). With the short adapter you can use the lens hood through the entire zoom range without any vignetting. If you screw the longer adapter tube to the shorter one you will experience vignetting except at the far end of the zoom. The short adapter (Bower) sits very firmly on the body and supports the hood quite well. The camera takes on a much different look... pretty cool. Figure about $30 for the adapter set and $20 for the hood.... also offers good bump protection for the lens. The longer adapter will not mount to the camera body.. it must attach to shorter one. Note .. the adapter would not mount to a P7100 because of what seems to be a zoom limiter gizmo under the ring. If you want to see a picture of of the adapter and the hood on the camera, let me know. Hope this answers your question.

Jim.. just a side note ..if you look closely at the lens on DSC-0016 you will see a glued-on UV filter specifically for the P7000 and P7100. It is in response to the infamous "shutter jam" in which debris and dust builds up on the shutter veins and jams them open or closed. About $30 om Ebay. search for "ACMAXX Multi Coated Lens Armor UV Filter and you will also bring up the adapters and lens hoods.

By "set-up" if you mean the Bower adapter tube, we tried it on a P7100 which is owned by a friend of mine and it would not mount due to what seems to be a zoom limiter switch under the ring preventing the adapter tube from mounting properly. If you are referring to the "UV Filter" that attaches to the front of the lens.. then "yes" it will fit a P7100..

I am referring to the adapter tube, It works perfectly om my P7100 and the zoom works also. I have the Polaroid tube which I believe is the exact same thing as the Bower. Hope this helps.

Here is an alternative. It works for me... YMMV.

> Start with the Bower (58mm) tube set, I purchased mine from Ebay ($10.85 incl shipping):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180751073099&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:1123

> Because this setup vignettes rather severely at wider focal lengths, I replaced the second half of the Bower with a Lensmate G12/G11/G10 Adapter - Part B (72mm filter holder. It threads onto the first half of the Bower tube perfectly ($23.95 + shipping):
http://www.lensmateonline.com/store/G11partB.php

At wider focal lengths (lens retracted) this setup acts as a lens hood. If you want a hood at full zoom, you can simply insert the unused Bower section in between. (BTW... that's gaffers tape on the first section as it is a good place to store it.)

You can mount a 72mm filter to the setup. Since I already had a 72mm to 77mm step ring, I use my 77mm Circular polarizer (pictured).

This isn't as sexy as the other reply, but it's functional. I hope this helps.

Hi Pilihp,

Thanks for posting your setup (and the nice pictures!).

I am leaning towards your solution of using the Canon hood because it screws on securely. I always have a hood fitted to all my lenses as a precaution against damage and that is what swayed me.

Thanks for the references, using ebay has saved me quite a bit...

I hope it works for you...

This setup provides the benefit of a filter mount also; I'm not sure if that is the case with the other setup. Perhaps the other poster could clarify this point, I wouldn't want to assume anything (since I am admittedly unfamiliar with it...)

Good luck!

I got the Bower extension tubes for the P7000 and Bower tulip hood today from B&H. The whole thing was just $21 and change including shipping as best I remember. I sprung for the cheap plastic Bower hood since I wasn't sure how this thing might work. As it turns out, using just the extenion tube that bayonets onto the camera and the tulip hood, it's not too bad--except that it renders the optical viewfinder useless. You have to rely on the rear screen to compose. Still, it could be worse. Incidentally, the little after market ever-ready case for the P7000 will not close with any of this on the camera. You have to take the extention tube off to put the top cover of the ever-ready case on the camera. It does work just using the bottom of the ever-ready case, though. --For what it's worth . . .

I have received my Bower adapter but it is "doing what it is designed for" ie fixing the lens in the wide angle position...

Comparing the adapter with the original cover it seems that the difference is a small chamfer machined into the adapter just where there should be a shoulder. This shoulder on the original cover presses against the upper interlock and thereby allows the lens full zooming. This "upper" interlock is opposite the release button.

The other interlock does not appear to be activated at any time by the cover or adapter.

I am just mulling over a solution and I think glueing (Loctite 480) a small piece of the smallest cable tie end in the strategic place and trimming it with a sharp knife seems to be coming to the fore :>)

If anyone sees a problem with my proposal I'd appreciate a comment...

I received my ebay hood kit today. The quality of the parts seems to be very good. The adapter is the only P7000 specific part. There is also a Kenko 52mm UV filter, a 52mm flower hood, and a 52mm Nikon branded lens cap. The hood can be used either with or without the UV filter.

The new adapter does not have a cut for the zoom interlock button. If you zoom to telephoto without the adapter or original cover and press on the upper interlock button, the P7000 will retract to wide angle. If you cut the adapter so you can zoom to telephoto, the lens will hit the UV filter if it is in place. Kind of a no win situation.

Hi Jim,

With my adapter fitted there seems to be a slight alignment difference because sometimes it disables zoom and at other times allows it... In my case I don't intend to fit any filter I just want the lens shade so I want the zoom enabled.

I have not had an opportunity to study the _two_ interlock buttons again to be sure that, after I take out my dremel, the interlocks will be in the same position as when the original cover is on. At first I thought I had to add material to the adapter but now I'm not so sure and I won't have time to get down to this for another week or so.

In the meantime my P7000 still accompanies me everywhere because it's so easy to carry and the results are so good.
