Welcome.

Remember three things,

1. Curb your enthusiasm when the camera arrives. Put the battery on charge BEFORE you use the camera even once and let the battery charge for at least three or four hours before you put it in the camera. the first charge is critical to how the battery works for the rest of it's life.
2. Use the enforced wait to throughly read and understand the user manual.
3. Set the CSM menu to "Advanced" so you get the use of all the features you will want but that are hidden by default.

congratulations!!
I also got my d50 this year, when i was 15. . My parents forced me to read the manual by taking some people out to dinner, which bored me out of my mind.

welcome to nikonians!

The CSM menu is the tab that looks a bit like a wrench (or spanner in this part of the world).
The third item is called "CSM /Setup Menu". By default this option is set to "Simple". Change the setting to "Detailed" (Not Advanced as I wrongly suggested above)and you will find that you have about 6 extra options available to you including the Dust reference photo, Image Rotation, File number sequence and Mirror lock up.

I could also have answered this query by saying that you should just actually read your owners manual (page 68). The manual is included as a source of useful information it is not a paper weight or Nikons attempt to rid the world of trees.

Go to the Nikonusa.com site and down load the manual and start reading it.

It will be confusing at first.

It is written in a foreign language -- Nikonesse.

Personally I shoot RAW+Jpeg. Granted it eats up card space but, the jpegs are great for instant sharing on the web. Ans I can just dump the card and review my images in the windows viewer later.

I shoot therefore, Iam.

Why is that? I thought that Lithium-Ion batteries do not suffer from "memory effect"? Is it bad if the camera's turned on before the batterie's first charge?

LiION batteries do not have a memory effect charge to charge but they do require several very good long charges when new to be able to reach their full capacity.
Doing a short or no charge from new can result in a battery that will never fully charge therefore the owner will wonder why they (for example) only get 300 shots per charge consistantly when everybody else gets 500.

You will love the d50. I am still rapt.

Ken Rockwell has a good quick tutorial on the D50 at http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d50/d50-settings.htm and for more detailed info you can buy the guide to the D50 from Thom Hogan but the Ken Rockwell one is a good starting point.

I recently read that the 18-135mm lens is to be released in October. I don't know how accurate that is. Most sites seem to be saying "available for preorder" instead of providing a specific availability date. That said, I hope you get your lens soon and that you enjoy your new camera.

If worse comes to worse you could pick up a used 18-55 or 28-80 for less than $100 to get you by until the lens comes in, then sell the cheap lens for probably what you paid.

From my experience, is pretty hard to sell the 18-55mm~ Not that many people exactly look for this lens used.

btw, welcome to the nikon family! You will love your D50 once you get a handle of it

I was thinking about getting the 50/1.8 for $109 but i want to keep the cost as low as possible, so I'll just wait...

I've pretty much got the hang of the camera by now, been playing with it alot, and getting my menus set up the way i want.

the 2.5fps is fun to play with

Got an email telling me the lens shipped yesterday and is scheduled for delivery on the 6th!!! I'm so excited!
Although I just checked the tracking and it isn't working...so that's weird, but last I saw it was checked in to somewhere in Kansas at 2:50AM this morning...

Congratulations

I have also purchased my D50 this year, I purchased it in january.
I have had a lot of fun with it. i purchased the 2 lenses outfit. 18-55mm and 55-200mm.

the manual is confusing to say the least, i have read thru a great part of it, after a while it all looks the same and I'm more confused than when i started.

i came across this site within the nikon site and it was a great deal of help, its especially tailored to the D50 and it goes thru pretty much every possible situation and settings.

<http://www.nikondigital.com/main.html>
under products select Digital SLR then D50

on the bottom left hand there is a menu select the last option Digitutor and have a ball

or click on this link

<http://www.nikondigital.com/d50_digitutor/index.html>

i found it to be extremely helpfull

i hope this helps

Thanks
Pedro
