Great photos all around.

So what is it about B&W photography that is so appealing, even in this digital age where producing pictures with good color is much easier than it used to be?

Does the simplicity of the B&W just make your mind focus on the subject matter more instead of on the complexity of the colors?

You have to take the photo in colour then convert it to B&W with software.

Hey! I just saw this assignment and I thought the same thing.

We don't actually HAVE a Black & White shooting mode. So, shoot and then post process it in the photo editing application of choice!

Wow!

Lots of great shots. I check in on the D50 forum from time to time and I agree, you guys post photos where it virtually never happens in the D70/s forum.

If you like the B&W medium, get your fannies over to the B&W digital and film forum and post your images! Be sure to browse around also and see works from F2's to D2x's.

Hello everyone. Here is a picture that was taken a few weeks ago. I was asked by the brides parents to shoot candid pics while they had a hired photog for posed pics. This was taken in raw and actually looks better as a tif(converted from RAW) but I decided to make this a JPG for easier viewing on the net.

Another great assignment from James and as usual our members do the D50 proud.

I'm a little late to this one because I've been out of town on business for weeks and I've had spotty internet access.

B&W is difficult for me for a couple reasons. First, I love landscapes with colors that really pop. I admit though that B&W can be used to a great effect, as shown in this thread. For me, a B&W photo invokes the idea of distant memory rather than a current event, and therefore I think works best on pictures of people. The 2nd problem I have with B&W is that I have a tendency to like best the first version of any photograph I see, that is if someone first shows me a B&W, then the color original, I like the B&W better, and vise-versa, and I obviously see all my shots in color first.

Anyway, this shot I took during a boat ride on Lake Luzern during my business trip in Switzerland. This zeppelin does aerial tours of the lake & surrounding mountains. The harsh mid-day sun made for a very monochromatic and IMO uninteresting shot, which along with the zeppelin being a historical airship, I thought made a good candidate for B&W.

Anyway...

ISO 200
Nikkor 55-200DX @ 200mm
Hoya CPL

Here is one I took at a recent wedding . My heart about stopped when I seen White Tux and it was an outside Wedding in Bright Sunshine .
I'm not real sure of the best way to convert to Black & White in PS-3 .

My Mom (now 70) remarried in May and asked me to take pictures for her at the wedding. Was able to catch this of the groom's (now 75) granddaughter who was a flower girl.

Great thread. I'm cheating here, because this one was taken by my daughter's boyfriend using her D50! (I have a D70s) Not so much technically good, but while reviewing images from our recent trip I found this image (a self portrait?) of the photographer reflected in my daughter's sunglasses. Cropped extensively (as you can imagine) from a full waist-up candid portrait shot! Just thought it was interesting. Shot with Sigma 18-200 at 95mm 1/500 @ f9.

Ok, here is a B&W I took during March 2006. Its was at an Arts festival in the Klein Karoo, South Africa. This lady was walking around in the crowds, absorbing the sights and sounds of the festival. When I photographed her, she had this look on her face: Thus the title of of the picture: "What ya looking at?"

Not tried B&W before really, still trying to get to grips with the software and I'm not one for sitting for hours in front of the computer; but it's a start.

Very nice.

Questions: Do you always set to "Hard" sharpness, or did you select it only for this shot? Also, was this on a tripod or did the VRII do its job?

Hi mfa,

On my D50 yes, the custom setting for sharpness is always on the stongest possible.

I used a tripod in this shot, so no contribution by VR technology.

Regards
