"Okay D50 crew lets do a weekend photo assignment"

Since I do not believe any of our Mods are D50 users(correct me if I'm wrong) I decided we needed to have some fun this weekend. Another reason is a thread in the cafe about not enough people posting their photo's except the very advanced and pro members. So lets step out as a forum and show the D2 crowd that D50 users are on the ball!

What I suggest is take a photo of something you either see everyday or use everyday. So many times we get caught up in looking for the perfect photo we forget that everyday things can be cool to.

Goals of the assignment take a photo of something you see or use everyday and get a unique perspective of it then post it, and most of all have fun.

Also to prevent multiple threads post here okay. Thanks

Here's one I took and I will take more. I pass this sign everyday and never noticed it had nice color and different shades up and down with a nice background. I took this from the passanger seat on the way home while moving I guess that makes it a unique perspective More to come.

If I am over stepping my bounds mods please let me know. Kind regards Jim.

Photo challenges are a lot of fun! A forum I used to frequent would do one every 2 weeks or so, then everyone would vote on the photos, and the person with the most votes would choose the topic for the next challenge.

Good post Jim! I'll be sure to post up one.

I haven't been able to do much shooting this weekend - I spent all day (and night) setting up a new computer, and transferring everything from the old computer...

This is a shot I took of my youngest daughter Friday night, and that I submitted for an ad in the program for her dance recital.

Nikon D50
Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D
SB-28 flash
On camera flash
1/60 sec - F/1.8
ISO: 200

I set up the SB-28 on a tripod at a 45 degree angle and triggered it with the on camera flash. I then converted it to B&W in PSP because the program is printed in B&W

Hi, Im new to this site. I just got my D50 last week and am still learning how to use it; and about photography in general. I thought for my first post, this would be interesting. As a non paying member i dont think i can post a pic, but i can give a URL (i think). "http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j114/PFDJ/My%20Backyard/Weathered_003.jpg?"

Its a pic of a row of pots i have in backyard. no flowers in them at the moment since its still too cold, buti thought it was a neat shot.
The pic is 111kb in size. I used a D50 (of course), 50 mm F/1.8, 1/160 sec-F/4, ISO 200

A fun project and great pictures everyone.

I don't have a D50 but I enjoyed reading this thread.

Thanks, Guitarmaniac and James23p. I think this was my best effort at good background blur with my (only lens so far,) 18 - 55 kit lens. I think that having the background so far away is what made it work. Do you have suggestions of other ways I can get background blur? If it is up close, I tend to just get a stripe of focus slanting across the bottom of the frame. I know I mostly need to *practice* Thanks again.

Your 18-55 doesn't have a large enough aperture(larger the aperture the smaller numbers) you need f2.8 or larger like f1.8 etc the kit only goes to f3.5 at 18mm and f5.6 at 200mm.

I'd suggest the Nikkor 50 1.8D its cheap and can blur the background just a few inches behind the main subject. Plus it will give you a good low light lens. But you did very well with the Kit lens! Jim

In general, if the aparature is larger (a smaller f-stop) then your depth of field (the area of the image that is in focus) is smaller. Since changes in aperature change the amount of light making it to the film, or in the case of the D50 (I hark back to the film days), the sensors. This means you will need to adjust the shutter speed accordingly. I am new to digital, but thankfully, this is the same. I am having to get used to the concept of "white balance" but I'm pleased with what I've been getting so far.

I am looking forward to the next assignment!!

Ok, I have a question. I read this thread when it was first suggested, but I went on vacation the next day. My question is, if I took the photos with my D50, and they are of things seen everyday, even if they aren't seen everyday by me can I post one?

Thanx.

Ok! I'm a little late with this but here it goes anyways.

I walk over or near this almost every day.

I would call it: "Internet In Here"

Two off site links (until I get a new credit card or Nikonians starts taking PayPal for registration ha ha ha!):

"Internet In Here" - Small with EXIF data

"Internet In Here" - Original sized 2.some file unresized for your pleasure.

Ok, so I am not sure just how unique of perspective these are, but here is a link to some of the photos I took this past weekend with my D50. I like them, and I hope so do the rest of you.

Here is a picture of a bluebonnet that I took over the weekend. There is a small patch of them near my work and besides a small crop and size readjust, it's straight out of the camera.

Jim,
A great idea to get the ball rolling for us D50 users. I think your comment . ."Another reason is a thread in the cafe about not enough people posting their photo's except the very advanced and pro members." is quite on target. I haven't been a Nikonian for long but I was beginning to see a 'pro, advanced amatuer trend' throughout the community. Thought it may just have been my paranoia so, it's nice to see others have detected same. Gonna go now and take some pix. Maybe one will show up as per your assignment!
Thanks again,

Don

Hi Phil,

To answer your question, you put a ? after .jpg and then put the link in quotes.
I've fixed it for you.

And just as a reminder, our guidelines allow for the posting of three images or
links per day. Feel free to re-edit your post with whichever three images you'd like up there.

You're right, Jim, there are some great photos here.

However, I need to point out that there are several images
in this thread, posted with inline links, that exceed the posting guidelines
of 100KB.

I won't go back and break all the links now, but please remember in
the future, that inline links must meet the same guidelines as those
held on our server - 800 pixels on the longest side, and 100KB maximum file size.

Thank you all and keep shooting!

-Lela

I don't know if this will "count", but here's my justification: I've been looking at my dead garden plot next to the driveway every day over the winter months as I get in and out of my car. Today I just noticed this guy poking out of the ground and trying to grow. It's about the size of a half-dollar. As far as change of perspective, I added an extension tube to my Sigma 50-500mm, got down low and grabbed this shot.

Jim. this is a good idea, well done. Sorry I haven't posted anything yet, it's been "one of those weekends" so far. But I'll see if I can get any time/inspiration.

Edited to add, since first replying I took a brief excursion into the front garden and came up with this. Thought I'd post up something, even if not very original (if I get a chance later I might see if I can come up with something else)!

Yes, I know the grass needs cutting, the leaves need sweeping and most of all, my edge cutter need a bit of maintenance... but what's a bit of rust between friends

Hi All,

I´ll send you here a pix of an everyday visitor in our backyard here in Espoo (near to Helsinki, Finland). You can also see that we have passed (partly) winter time and heading to summer (via spring time ofcourse). Today we have had max + 7 C and the forecast for the Easter is + 10 C and sunny. Not bad!

Keep taking photos,

Here's a flower that's been sitting on our kitchen island for the past few weeks. I was walking through the kitchen the other day and I realized I had a perfect subject right in front of me - http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i139/Kamandante/DSC_0044.jpg.

This is a photo of my kids pet albino hamster 'Snowy' I took the other evening. I took the 'roof' off of his bedroom, which he was a little confused by.

The photo is a 50% crop of the original, with no post-processing, and was taken with a D50 (of course) and a Sigma 30mm f1.4 (1/80th @ f1.8 @ ISO800)

Just did a little tweaking (A little noise reduction and some brightness/contrast enhancement). Let me know what you think.

I just saw MI3 @ the theatre and your raindrops caught my attention. I can kind of see some cars in the outside world but I had to rotate the image upside down and back to front. I hope you don't mind. I couldn't make out the model or license plate though

OK, I had a lot of time on my hands. But sometimes, for example, you can see the photographer/camera in people's eyes.
