D50 no longer capturing images correctly

My D50 has worked well until recently. The first sign of an issue was when a few pictures taken were bleached out - looking very much as if someone had opened up the camera case in an old film camera, overexposing part of the pictures.
The images now are not even that good. Primarily red, with purple and yellow vertical line segments, with a white ghost image on the right third of the image.
Sounds like something is kaput, but was looking to see if anyone knows what could be the specific problem.
