"50mm 1.8 sdoesn't work with D40 but does with D200"

I have a Nikkor AF 50mm 1:1.8 D lens that works fine with my D200 - i.e. gives my autofocusing, but it doesn't with my D40. Is this correct? Is there a setting on the D40 that I can use to tell it to recognise the AF capability of this lens?

Its a non DX lens - but it works fine on the D200.

Would be grateful for any tips.

Hi Khalid,

The D40 doesn't have an internal focus motor, so it only work in manual mode. You must get an AF-S (silent wave motor) lens, like the new AF-S 50mm f/1.8G, to be fully compatible with your D40.

Check this post, which is pinned at the top of the Forum, for a list of lenses that are fully compatible with your D40. Unfortunately, your AF 50mm f/1.8D is not on the list, because it lacks the internal autofocus motor that the D40 relies upon. It will work other than AF, though

To get full function on the D40 or comparable cameras, you would need the newer AF-S 50mm f/1.8G Nikkor.

Thank you both! I should have read the post first.

It works a treat on my D200. I guess I was looking for a Prime with a wide aperture and AF for the D40. The D40 is so much more convenient to carry around for casual photography.

I actually don't mind focusing manually too much - I had to learn as I recently invested in a 50mm f1.2 for the D200.

I can see there are lots of decent AF-S lenses on ebay. I am after prime really as I love the optics with these.

However the reviews for the Nikon Nikkor AF-S G ED VR 24-120mm Lens are okayish ... its not everyones favourite lens. I have my eye on one on ebay. But as a general purpose lens it should be OK I guess. Any opinions on this lens?

The Nikkor 50/f1.8 AFS will AF on the D40. There's also a 50/f1.4 AFS at about twice the price.

There are two versions of the 24-120mm ED IF AF-S VR, the discontinued
24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR and the far superior current 24-120mm f/4G ED IF AF-S VR.
Which version are you considering?
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Hi Khalid,

The D40, D40X, D60, D3000, D5000, D3100, and D5100 bodies do not have AF motors built into the camera body and require AF-S type lenses that have the AF motor built into the lens to provide AF.
The D200 has an AF motor built into the camera body that drives the screwdriver type AF mechanism in the AF 50mm f/1.8D.
While the D200 will provide metering with your 50mm f/1.2 AIS, the D40 will not. Though it will mount on the D40 and work in Manual mode using the Sunny 16 rule or the histogram via trial and error to set the exposure.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty
