Just bought a used D40x that came with the standard kit lens. I wondering if I could get some help. The lens was obviously shaken up by the previous owner and a part has come loose inside the lens that seats on the back of the lens. It is two separate pieces, where one piece stays at the bottom and the other, I would assume, travels with the lens as it zooms in and out. I do not know what this piece is called, and I can not find where it is supposed to "live" within the lens. I can post images of the piece outside of the camera, if necessary. Any help would be greatly appreciated, due to the fact that sending the lens to a repair shop will cost more than buying a new one.

Hi Nathan,
Welcome to Nikonians! Sorry to hear of your problem. Are you saying that the rear lens element is broken off the lens? If there is a lens element detached from the lens, I would suspect a broken lens barrel or a broken or loose retaining ring. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

I can't really tell for sure what has broken off, but assuming that in fact something is broken, there's little point in pursuing this as any repair will cost significantly more than just getting a new one. This is about a $120 lens, and there are literally millions of them out there.
Repairing it at home is not much of a realistic possibility, as there is not much in these lenses that doesn't have to be there and in some fairly precise position.
