There is an AF-S version of this lens Nikon discontinued in 2004 that has full capability on the D40x. You could find one used.

The current 80-200 AF-D will not autofocus on the D40x, so would be manual focus only.

Hi Andy,

Welcome to Nikonians!
The D40X does not have an AF motor built into the camera body.
As Randy wrote above, the AF 80-200mm f/2.8 is a screwdriver type AF lens and will not Autofocus on the D40X. It will meter and can be used in Manual Focus mode.
The only version of the 80-200mm that will provide AF on the D40X is the 80-200mm f/2.8D ED IF AF-S as the AF motor is built into the lens.
