Change your colourspace to AdobeRGB, turn sharpening to +1, and aperature depends on the lens, but the general consensus is f8-11 seems to be the best......the best way to take good pictures is practise (and upgrade your lens if you have the 18-55...)

Mode Ia: Renders natural-looking skin tones out of the camera. (sRGB) Mode II: Realizes a wider color range suited for processing or retouching. (Adobe RGB) Mode IIIa: Renders vivid landscape and flora colors out of the camera. (sRGB)
Use Adobe RGB only if you are going to do some editing with photoshop, normally monitors are calibrated to sRGB colourspace and Adobe RGB colors are off.
For best "straigt out of the camera" results use those "Digital Vari-Programs"
