"Would you trade your D40/D40X/D50/D60 for .... ?"

Petaling Jaya, MY

Okay. This is me thinking (bad idea - yet again) of a funny (potentially funny) question.

Would you trade your D40/D40X/D50/D60 for? If you could/would what would you trade in for anyway? Just curious.

For me, I would NEVER trade it for anything. Even for a D90. Love this one to bits. It's too much fun to snap without it (for me that is). If I have a bit of money I'll buy the D90 but I won't trade it in. But that's my take. Anyone out there feels the same way?

At least on paper, I'd STRONGLY consider trade it for the new D3000. Same size as D40 - more AF areas (only 3 can be annoying), 3d focus tracking.

I'd also consider a straight-up trade for a D3x, which i'd promply sell to rebuy the D40 (or D3000) plus a pile of other junk

Agreed. Straight up trade for a D3x is what I was thinking.

It's unlikely I'd ever get rid of my D50 or its old trusty 18-70 lens, because neither would fetch enough money to replace the value they have to me.

Once I feel I've learned all I can with my D40 and feel I need further options in a body, I'll be moving up. No question. Probably a D300 (or whatever the equivalent is at the time).

But, I will always hang on to this camera. It's my first DSLR and it will always have its uses and a place in my bag.

Ken Rockwell (kenrockwell.com), who loves the D40, is bashing the D3000, says it's "the worst DSLR Nikon has ever made" (http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/d3000.htm).

I have a D300, but I also still have my D50 and use it a lot. For most purposes you couldn't tell which camera the photo came from, and the D50 has the advantage of being smaller and lighter. (And, it's the biggest and heaviest of the D40/50/60 the original post asked about!)

The D50 was my first DSLR, and at least part of what I like about it (outside of the fact that it's a great camera, period) is that it's been a lot of places with me and taken a lot of photos I really like, so carrying it with me is almost like taking an old friend along.

Hi Brian,

I don't have any of the bodies you list but for a straight up trade for a D3X, D3, D700, or even a D300 I would get one.
I would not get rid of my D70S for the same reason as Larry.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

I sold my D40 but I miss it alot. It is one of the few cameras that can do off camera flash with high sync speed.

Recently bought a D90 and gave the D50 to my daughter with one condition. I get first refusal if she ever decides to sell it.

That fast flash sync is seldom needed but hard to let go. She is only 15 miles away, however, so we can trade cameras for a day or two. (grin)

I am looking to sell my d-50 body to get a d-90 or d-300. I don't have the need for 2 bodies and my kids and wife aren't interested in using it. It has been a great body to use, but I want faster FPS for sports shots.

You won't get much selling your D50. Are you sure you wouldn't rather keep it as a second camera? I bought a D300, but still have and still use my D50. In most circumstances you couldn't tell which camera took the photo. But sports is one area where I always use my D300.

I'd trade my D40x for a D70s. Not that I am unhappy with the D40x, but it is used primarily as a backup for me and about half of my lenses are screwdriver focus.
