My wife has muttered that she wants her own camera instead of sharing the D80, and as the budget is limited we don't just buy a D300. I was thinking of finding a used D40 or D50 and see if it will actually be used.
Apart from the 50/1.8, all our lenses should work on both cameras. We rarely print above A4 (21x30cm), so 6MP ought to do. We are mostly in the Algarve, i.e. plenty of light.
Any thoughts? I will of course be comparing prices to a new D40(x?). Does any of them share battery with the D80?
"Old age looks like a pretty bad deal until you consider the alternative."
Hi Martin, I know the D70, D70S use the EN-EL3, EN-EL3a, and EN-EL3e. If I am not mistaken the D80 only uses the EN-EL3e? I am not sure about the D50. The EN-EL3e battery will work in all cameras. The EN-EL3/a will only work in the older bodies and not in the D80. The D70/D70S also have a built in focus motor as does the D50. I think the sensor is the same in all of the bodies. Good Luck! By the way; Great Name "Martin"
I vote you get a D90, new or used D80, or a used D50. That keeps you fully compatible on lenses (including your 50mm), memory cards, and batteries (with the exception noted above). D700/D300/200/90/80/70/50 all use en-el3 batteries, but older batteries sold with D70 & D50 (anything beflore en-el3e) don't have the 3rd contact for battery monitoring and can't be used in D80 and up.
Look on eBay and see if Cameta is selling refurb D80s. I just got a refurb D200 from them and it looks to be in at least near mint condition and only had 1282 actuations. It was $812 including shipping and comes with a one year warranty.
I can also vouch for Cameta, having made several purchases from them. (a couple of lens, a new D80 body) and the last being a D40 body for my wife. The D40 was listed as a sales sample but other than having about 50 actuations on it, i couldnt tell it had ever been unpackaged.
Well due to circumstances beyond my control a D300 is now a dream for next year, and the D90 is also out of bounds, however the D80 is soooooooooooooooo cheap now I am going to get one of those instead, as I haven't seen a singe post on here advising someone NOT to get one. Even in the UK you can buy them brand new for £450! There are some used D80s on ebay (UK) cheaper than brand new ones!
