"Why is it possible to use pre-Ai on D40 and not on D80?"

Rome, IT

I was wondering why on this table (http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html)is stated that it is possible to use pre Ai lenses on D40 without damaging the bayonet and not on D80. Both of them lack of the meter coupling lever so what is the difference in the bayonets that allow to mount F lenses on D40 (and similar) and not on D80 (and similar)?
Best Regards
m.

The D40/D40x/D60 have a minimum aperture sensing switch that is of a different design to the one on the D70/D70s/D100/D80, the switch is pressed in by the aperture ring and not slid sideways.
