Hi, I am looking for a 50mm for my D40, I would like the Sigma one with auto focus but at $500 ,it's just not in the budget right now. Will any Nikon 50mm function(minus the AF), or is there a certain model I need for this camera? thanks

Both of the current Nikkor 50 mm lenses (f1.4 and f1.8) are compatible with your D40 (minus auto-focus). The f1.4 is pricey @ around $300. The f1.8 less so @ about $100.The 50 mm has been considered the "Normal" lens because it approximates normal human vision. But with the D40's 1.5X crop factor, the 50 mm now equals 75 mm!I have the Sigma 30 mm f1.4 HSM (IIRC about $300), which is an excellent lens and auto-focuses with the D40. D40D80

The 50mm AF and AF-D lenses will meter on your D40. Older MF lenses (AI, AI-S, Series-e) will not meter.Larry - a Bay Area NikonianMy Nikonians gallerywww.tempered-light.com
