"zoom lens for D40"

Hickory, US

Friends,
My D40 is my first digital SLR. Major rookie here. My primary use will be shooting our 8 year old daughter playing soccer, riding
horse, living life.
Could someone recommend a zoom lens that would be good for us?

Thank you,

Thomltd

The 18-55 that comes with the D40 is a nice little lens, but it is a wide to mid lens. You may want to get the popular 18-200 with VR-II which will cover most focal lengths you could imagine using, and and can leave on the body most of the time, while minimizing the inheritant risk of introducing dust onto the sensor that comes with frequent lens changes. Overall, I am happy with mine. Many on here also like this lens for it's unusual versatility. The more advanced Vibration Reduction (VR-II) works very well.

I have to agree with this. The 18-200 mm lens is light weight, portable, and probably all you'll ever need from a lens. Unfortunately, it does come with a hefty price tag (I purchased mine from Cameta Camera for about $825). The bright side is that it's really an all-purpose lens that can substitute 2 or 3 lenses you might potentially invest in. When you add it all up in the end, I think it's a worthy investment.

I bought my D40 and 18-200 mm lens in June and the two have been inseparable ever since.

The 70-300 vr has more reach.

It would be my choice as I never have enough reach taking images of sports, kids, and horses. (my zooms end at 200 mm.

you already have the 18-55 lens, so instead of getting an 18-200, get the 55-200 VR. It is a lot cheaper and it works great for everyday shooting.

I would say get the 55-200VR or the 70-300VR. I have the 70-300VR and it's a super lens. It's what I use when I take shots of my 4yr old grandaughter at her soccer games. Great in good light.

Try getting the 55-200 VR. its a lot less pricey than the other lenses and its perfect for your needs of taking pictures of your daughter.

P.s try getting it in october because that's when the rebates probably will come out

18-70mm + SB-400 and you're good to go.

The 18-135 is also a nice option. I'm not sure if 70mm would get you in close enough on the soccer field, I'd probably want some more length if at all possible. If you're looking to not have to swap lenses back and forth it's not a bad lens. It's certainly a lot cheaper than the Nikkor 18-200.

I'm also not sure the current pricing on the Sigma 18-200mm HSM lens with Optical Stabilization (Sigma's VR), but it looks like it can be had for around 5 bills.

Three lenses to look at:
- 55-200mm VR (keep the 18-55mm kit lens)
- 70-300mm VR (keep the 18-55mm kit lens)
- 18-200mm VR (replace the 18-55mm kit lens and 55-200mm upgrade lens)

In your situation, I would get the 70-300mm VR. It's a good bang for your buck. 300mm reach, VR, it's all good.
