Congrats! I've had my VR55-200mm for about 4 months now and It stays on my camera 80% of the time. Awesome piece of glass especially for the price.

I picked up the 55-200mm VR lens about two weeks back and have taken some pretty nice shots with it. You'll just have to get used to standing back a bit for portraits if you solely used the 18-55mm kit lens previously. The 55-200mm stays on my camera the majority of the time.

Please do share some photos with your new lens.

I like that lens for my kids sports. It's not a 70-200 f2.8 but it's also less than 1/4 the price and way more manageable.

At first youd think it wouldnt really be good for (indoor) weddings because if the small aperature but VR and the D40s good high ISO performance should make it very possible.

Yes it works very well with the D40s great low-noise ISO settings. I was using my 55-200 last night on ISO 800 with hardly any noticeable noise. I could get shutter speeds around 125 which was good for some sports shots.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your lens. I just picked mine up about 20 days ago and I love mine as well

question regarding the D40 and only being able to handle AF-S lenses I want to get a macro lens that isn't AF-S wouldn't that just mean I couldn't auto focus but still manually focus? sorry for a newbie question.

Thanks in advance!

Virtually any Nikon glass will work on your D40, but you will have to focus manually.

But then, with all these old lenses on my F bodies, I always had to focus manually. And didn't even know that there was any other way.

Only hangup here is that the older Nikon bodies had a variety of ground glass for the viewfinders, with a variety of split-prisms, micro prisms, etc, to make focusing easier. But some one here just mentioned that there is a "katzeye" focusing screen available for the D40. Can't wait to see it.

I must admit, I was somewhat skeptical when I bought this glass, after buying my D40 kit. OK, feels flimsy, cheal plastic mount, some corner cutting with regards to build (certainly compared to the real high end stuff out there) But, it really is a bargain, and Nikon probably could have charged double what they did, and still would have sold a lot of them. As it is, they are selling a ton. It was also a great marketing move, as it opens the door for D40 enthusiasts to see what long focal lengths, with vibration reduction, can really do. And, to really get you hooked on the Nikkor lenses. I believe they call this on here NAS-Nikon Acquisition Syndrome?

that is really true, but personally I don't think it is cheap feeling when I'm using it. That may be just your opinion but I do think it's worth it spending the 50 dollars more for the Vibration reduction.

But the build quality itself of the lens, when you look at it, compared to one of their real high end prime lenses. The kit lens and the 55-200VR have plastic mounting rings. If you have ever held, or worked with, a classic Nikkor lens-they are built like a Swiss watch by comparison. The tactile feel is just so nice on them, compared to these newer "consumer grade" DX lenses.

Hi Folks!
I think this lenses are really nice, On my D50; I have the predecessor model of this lens (18-55mm) and i was satisfied with quality. Now I´ve changed to Tamron 28-75mm 2,8 for my requirements, but the 18-55mm still have it
For you information, Sigma has released a new 17-70mm with HSM and macro and this lens can work also on a D40/D40x

It will mount and meter, but not Autofocus.

There is a list of lenses that will AF with the D40 and D40x in an anchored thread at the top of this Forum. If it's not on the list, it won't AF
