"WIl this SD Card work in the D50?"

Chicago, US

Hi,

I'm considering purchasing a D50 and found a kit that offers a 1GB SecureDigital ™ memory card with 80x Ultra Performance technology by a company callend Transcend. I know that Nikon test cards to insure they work in their bodies. Is this brand of SD card on the list and does anyone know if it will work in the D50? Thanks.

There are many many Maufacturers out there -- Nikon can not test them all.

Just because Nikon has not tested a particular brand does not mean anything.

I can think of a couple of brands I would buy that they do not list -- Kodak, PNY, Delkin, Sandisk, -- (Sony if they have any)

Transcend are a well known brand in Australia and I assume throughout the Asia Pacific region.
You will have no problems at all with that card or any SD card faster than about 40x. The camera cannot transfer data quicker than that so the only benefit of a faster card is potentially when you download to your PC via a card reader and even that is so marginal it doesn't rate.

I've seen a few deals on cards rated at 40x, would you recommend staying away from those and only using cards rated at 80x?

I use the Panasonic Pro High Speed 1GB and a Kingmax Platinum 1GB.
Both cards work well and are rated at Max 20MB/s, but the Panasonic Card holds less pictures, I think it is 977MB compared to 1024MB of the Kingmax card.
I am really suprised that Nikon hasn't listed the Lexar Cards.

Usually in situations like this the only products listed are those that have been submitted for testing and where the manufacturer of the product has paid a "fee".
More than likely Lexar and other manufacturers have decided that the cost of the fee is not worth the benefit gained from being listed. After all there is an official standard for SD cards so as long as you meet that standard with your card it's then up to Nikon to ensure that their product (the camera) works with all cards that meet the standard.

I just copied this off of the US nikon support page:

Which SD storage cards have been approved for use with D50?

Answer
The following SD memory cards have been approved for use in the D50 digital SLR.

SanDisk 64/128/256/512/ MB, 1GB
Panasonic 64/128/256/512/ MB, 1GB
Toshiba 64/128/256/512/ MB

Other brands and capacities of cards may work, but Nikon cannot guarantee their operation. Check with the manufacturer of the third-party card for compatibility information. Nikon recommends keeping one of the approved cards available for troubleshooting.

Multi Media cards (MMC) are not recommended and should not be used.

When I saw the earlier post from the UK support page, I panicked.

I just purchased the SanDisk Ultra II 1gb SD card... and It wasn't on the list!

It appears that it will be ok(even though the site doesn't specify the 'Ultra II' part).

Hi Sam
The Transcend card rocks. I use 1 gig cards in mine. It is rated at 80x which is faster than sandisk ultra II cards. Transcen is much cheaper as well. I buy my cards, and much of my computer stuff from
www.newegg.com Their prices are hard to beat, and their delivery is excellent. Just MHO. Love the cards, love the company

Yes it will but because the D50 seems to use a FAT32 format it's unlikely anything bigger will work.
We will have to wait until >2Gb SD cards are released to check.
