"D40X lens compatibility"

HI All

I hope that someone can shed a bit of light re compatibility of old lenses with the D40X.

I've been using two Nikon FA bodies for the last 15 years, with a range of old AF Nikkor lenses. Having clung to my slide film for too long, I've decided to go digital and the D40X seems the best value for money at this stage.

However, I don't have the cash to go and buy a new 500mm lens! I have an old 560mm F5.6 Leitz-Weitlar (Leica) fully manual lens with its mount modified to fit a Nikon body. It's still in beautiful condition and I use it as my primary lens for wildlife. Does anybody know whether such a lens would work on the D40X? I understand that it would have to operate on fully manual (light metering, aperture and focus), but I've read in the lens compatibility chart that pre-AI lenses may damage the camera body, but I don't quite understand in which way (is it the aperture sensor? or electronic damage?)

Any help would be much appreciated

Kind regards

Adrian Haagner

If it works on your FA, it is an AI or AIS compatible lens, so it will be fine on your D40x - subject, of course, to the fully manual limitations.

The thing about pre-AI lenses is that they have some metal on their aperture rings that interferes with the aperture sensing mechanisms on AI and AIS cameras. If you mount a pre-AI lens on your FAs and turn the aperture ring, it could damage that mechanism.

I'm currently looking into the nikon d40x

but i'm a little unsure if my current lenses would fit the d40x

I have two sigma lenses, 24-70mm F3.5-5.6 and 70-300mm F4-5.6DL macro.

I do not know much about lenses and their compatability to bodies as these two lenses where given to me with the nikon n6006 that I have.

Can someone help me out and tell me if my lenses would fit?

Thanks

Your Sigmas will fit and they will meter normally, but they will not autofocus on the D40 or D40x. Depending on your eyesight and your photographic tastes, that may work out reasonably well, or it might not work well at all. If you tend to slow-moving disciplines such as landscape and macro, it may not be much of an issue. If you're into sports and other fast-moving action, you won't likely be enjoying manual focus.

would a AF-S VR 70-200mm 2.8G ED-IF work on a d40 with autofocus?

All AF-S lenses work as they have internal focusing motors. The ones that don't work are the screw types e.g. 50mm f1.8, 35-70 etc.
