"NewD40/D50 unofficial picture post -Black and White!!"

Okay team now the D40 has an onboard BW mode the D50 does not but we can convert team right! So lets see those BW pics of anything as long as it is BW and taken with the fabulous D40 and fantastic D50!(fabulous and fantastic both start with F for the Nikon "F" mount!!!):P

Heres mine from the wedding I did. I took 70 percent with my D80 but the rest with my D50 as I had different lens on each to make it easy not having to switch lens all the time.

Lets ring it up this time. Last time we hit 37 lets try for 50

Jim. I like the deserted look in the picture, which the b/w only amplfies. Greenwing, that rainbow looks stunning. Who would have thought a rainbow could look that good in b/w!

What's with the pup? He looks like he's given up completely

Here's another one! Going for 50 are we?

These are very powerful for several reasons. One is the sadness of this poor man then the show of love and loyalty some will never have as you look at the dog his faithful companion protecting him. I love the dog he has unconditional love and that is what life should be.

Last this has a look of the 1930 depression era, the overall pictures are very powerful. They make me sad but then I see the dog and glad this man has some love in his life a friend he doesn't have to impress, and by the looks of the dog he is happy and seems healthy.

Thanks Jim! I felt the same way as I saw this guy. Sad on one side but moved by the loyality of his faithful companion!

Great photo of the man and dog. I agre with everything Jim sais. Maybe just a little more contrast on the first one?

Well, this barely qualifies. I was out the other day shooting with my Nikkormat FTn. I developed the film, but didn't have a scanner. So, eager to see how the pictures turned out I took a moment to think of a way. My eyes fell on the glass table, then on the Micro Nikkor, then on my D50. So, using the MF Micro Nikkor on the D50 with a tripod, I put the negatives on the glass table and put a regular lightbulb underneath. This is the somewhat weird reult.

Crop off the sprocket holes, replace the pinkish tint with sepia, and lose a little of the sharpness, and it could have been a picture from a century ago! Necessity is the mother of invention! Nicely done, Hampus.

Thanks greenwing. Yeah, I thought it'd be fun not to crop the image. That pink look is actually Photo Shops idea of sepia, I thought it only turned pink on my laptop monitor... This was the first film I developed taken with the Nikkormat. It turned out it still takes perfect pictures after 40 years, amazing.

Well, only 33 more to go till we reach 50. Here's another.

Okay, actually sepia - but rescued from a disaster when I shot everything in JPEG Simple by mistake last week:

Thanx. We shot that in the local park and had a lot of fun doing it. I've got a lot to learn and that is the fun part of photography. Always another shot to take and capture it just right.

WOW!! beautiful and very interesting. You want to really look at this photo not just glance at it and say "that's nice". Great shot! What did you shoot it with? Give us some settings.

WOW! That picture is absolutely stunning! I thought digital had limited dynamic range (and wasn't going to bother using my D50), but that looks like it came from an Ilford negative!

Did you use any B/W filters (yellow, orange or red), or any special postprocessing for the rich contrast?

Ansel Adams would have been proud.

Hello. Took this shot and converted to BW with the D40's internal software. Otherwise resized and cropped with Picasa2. No additional edit... Thanks and enjoy.

BTW shot with D40 and 50mm 1.8

Okay, here are three of my first attempts at B&W with my new D40. 18-55mm kit lens was used. Location: Quito, Ecuador.

Critiques certainly welcome. I've been doing photography with a point-and-shoot for a long time, but this was my first DSLR. ; )

I have had my D50 for a year now and am loving it! Here are my submissions.

The first taken of some abandoned tobacco warehouses in Wilson, NC and the second taken at the San Juan Mission in San Antonio, TX. Used adjustment levels in Photoshop to achieve the B&W.

Robin only two photos came up. The child shot is excellent and so is the cat. Both are small files one is 300 x 200 I think the other is smaller. I generally post at either 640 x 400 or 800 x 600 or very close and stay to 100 kb. Jim

What DPI are you using? Usually, to get below 100kb, you'll need to lower the DPI....72dpi is good for web use.

Double check and make sure you are saving by "pixel" size and not inches or another measurement. That might be the problem.

I was too lazy to do creative photography just for this photo shootout so here is link:www.halosonic.org/Digikuvat/Linnut/07/BWPuna.jpg|Female Bullfinch> converted to B/W.

Equipment D50, Sigma 120-300mm + 1.4TC and of course a tripod.
B/W conversion is done with VirtualPhotographer and Paint Shop Pro 9.

I went out shooting today and saw these crab baskets in waiting. Here in Delaware crab season starts April 1st so they will soon be filled with Blue Crabs.

The conversion to black and white was done in Capture 4.4.2. It is my first time using this in post processing and it was fairly easy. But PLEASE tell me how I can make the shot better.

Hello all...

My first O-fficial post as a Nikonian. Shot was taken with my two-week old D40 and the ever-popular 50mm 1.8. Cropped the image with Picasa 2 to approximately 1:1 (macro), and did B/W filtered conversion. Otherwise, unedited. Hope this was within the rules BTW, I already have serious NAS...

Great shot of the flower. I am in the market for a macro lens but after seeing that shot maybe I can get away with a 50mm 1.8!! And save some $$$

I've only had my D50 for three months and I'm a long ways from being proficient at converting Color to BW.

My odd photo is reflections of neighboring buildings in the steel and glass Federal Building in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The slightly convex window glass combined with different angles of the walls gives an effect that looks like an illustration from a children's book by Dr. Seuss. The reflections change as you walk around the building.

The photo was taken with a D50 and 18-70mm. The original color pic is posted on my Flickr site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tecant/

P.S. I enjoy this type of post and learning from the photos of others. Please keep this up.

Thanks,

Tecant

Very sobering and on point. I have been a Paramedic for 23 years and a lab tech for 20 years this is part of life. Thanks for contributing. I am reluctant to say nice photo due to the subject but it is well done. Jim

Okay gang we reached 50 we can continue and maybe someone else has a suggestion for the next photo post.

Jim-

I have been thinking about what to suggest for next month. I am not sure what you have done before but being new to this, night photos are going to be a challenge. What about this for the next month?
