I am thinking of getting this lens. In the Nikon Systems Handbook, Moose Peterson describes it as beatifully sharp and calls it the sleeper of the decade. This lens seems like the perfect lens for a DSLR. The max aperture is a bit slow for shooting ISO 100 film, but at 200 or 400 with a DSLR it should be adequate. And 300mm will give a crop of 450 with a film camera, so it has a long reach. Have any of you used that lens? How is it at wide open aperture? I don't need a D or VR lens-just one that will meter with a D50. And I'd rather have a tripod collar than VR anyway.
