"Unofficial September Photo Challenge"

Del Mar, US

I wanted to start the next photo challege/assignment so here goes:

Motion: Capture the motion of an object, person, animal, plant, ect.
There are multiple ways to approach this. You can use fast shutter speeds to stop the action at the so called "decisive moment". You can use slower shutter speeds and move the camera for a panning effect where the background is blurred but the subject is not. Or you can use slower shutter speeds to create a different motion blur where the background is sharp but the subject is blurred. I am sure there are more way than the above but those are just a few to get people thinking. Have fun!

This is strange. I have just got back from an afternoon walk and I have some photos that qualify for this.

We live in a Tourist area. On weekend afternoons there is a procession of vehicles heading back down the mountain.

I have no idea about this one. I think it's what happens when you accidentally press the shutter when carrying a camera in one hand as you walk. What you see before you could be called "When road meets forest".

they should be. I have tried, and failed. Mine wasn't as good though. It was a silhouetted USMC AH-1 Cobra attack heli silhouetted against a coastal sunset. Only problem was the cobra was tiny in the frame, but the sunset looked cool

This is a little bit different approach than the sports/action. I took this while experimenting with my 50mm f/1.8D + Kenko extension tubes to see the close-up capability. I wasn't really planning on capturing the motion of the second hand but for this particular capture I liked the effect so I planned the lighting for a 1 second exposure:

I would think that the second hand would blur but instead there are two distinct second hands. Almost as if you had used a repeating flash

Yes I thought the same thing, but checking the watch the second hand doesn't move smoothly, it stays in one spot for nearly a second then very quickly jumps forward to the next, which gave me this effect.

I wonder if it would look cool if you did it for even longer, say 5 seconds? There would be 5 second hands, but would the minute hand start to blur?

Here's my entry. This was taken at a Ranger game last month and the first time using my Sigma 70-300mm APO at a professional game. Just a little word of advice for anyone wanting to do this....bring a monopod. This was a night game and I shot handheld and killed 3 out of 4 pictures. It was a blast though. =)

Nikon D50, Sigma 70-300mm APO f4-5.6, 270mm, 1/100, f5.6, Shutter Priority, ISO 200(I know..should have been higher), slight curves adjustment in PS CS2

I like the second one as well. The dark background really cleans it up and lets you focus on the rider.

Don't know if this meets the criteria but hopefully some of the atmosphere is captured. It's the Members Banking at the old Brooklands motor racing circuit. The first purpose built circuit in the world but not used since the beginning of WWII when some of the track was removed to allow Wellington bombers (which were built there) to take off and when trees were implanted within the concrete track to try and camouflage it from air attack.

I like that one. It certainly evokes the impression of movement - all those tyre marks on the track surface and the atmosphere of the shot.

Derek,

I like this one a lot. Everything's perfect, exoposure, color, sharpness, and composition. Definitely gives me the feel of carving that corner and looking for the apex...

Thanks a lot K1W1 and Larry. Brooklands is a great place to visit both from a moto racing and aviation perspective. Some great cars and motorbikes plus things like one of the Concords and the Sultan of Omans's VC10 all tricked out. Also a Wellington bomber.
The part of the track in my shot is probably the most evocative of the remaining banking.

No - the starburst was just lucky timing/angle of the sun.

It's also about the only photo I took in 3 days that is really worthy of keeping...that's the problem with taking panning shots I guess - so easy to mess it up!

Not the best of shots as I should have used a tripod to keep the stationary objects still, but it definately fits in the "action" part. This are two of my wifes cousins, when my kids get bigger I'll definately be trying this type of shot again. Lots of fun.

Here's a series of three that will make sense when you look at them. This was a company meeting where each of the managers took a turn "under the gun" while our employees took aim. The baloons full of water were kept in a bucket of ice...VERY COLD!!! This is one of my fellow managers who was unfortunately subject to this abuse many more times than the rest of us.

One from Labor Day weekend in Big Sur - Juvenile Red-Tail Hawk

This shot with (obviously) lots of available light using the 55-200mm kit lens. It goes to show this is a pretty nice little lens provided you're not shooting in a light-challenged setting.

D50
Nikkor 55-200DX @ 200mm
ISO 200
Aperture priority f/6.3

Great job everybody and keep doing the D50 proud!
