"Need a new fast lens for Nikon D90"

CA

Hi all,
I've just recently upgraded to Nikon D90 (from D80), and all I can say thus far is that the upgrade was worth every penny! I have two lenses that I've been using with my D80 last 4 years, and I have to say I was extremely happy with them: Nikon 18-200mm VR, and Sigma 10-20mm DC. I was thinking of getting the additional lens as well, primarily for indoor low light shooting, so I was thinking of getting a faster lens that won't break my bank. Can anyone please suggest what lenses to consider that will compliment well my other two lenses?
Thanks!!

Indoor, low light - the 35mm f/1.8 comes to mind for a DX body. The 50mm f/1.8 might not be a bad DX portrait lens.

If I remember correctly the 90 can take screw focus lenses right? I have a 35 f/2D I like on my 300s. You might also consider trying to pick up a used 35-70 f/2.8D. I find I use that a lot for family gatherings/picnics.

Guys, thank you all for the quick responses. After researching the web and reviewing all the comments, I went for Nikon 35mm 1.8. I've realized that the second option that was getting most votes (Nikon 50mm 1.8) was really mostly (if not exclusively) just for portraits. 35mm is much more versatile for the same buck.

I've just mounted the lens and took number of indoor shots with very limited light, and I can see why this lens is getting such a great reviews! Night and day difference in low light conditions from my everyday lens Nikon 18-200mm VR. I'm shooting with ISO 400 to 800 (in appose to ISO 3200) with much nicer results.

Once again, thank you all!

Yes, a few stops can make a large difference. It can mean shooting at ISO 400 instead of 3200 and benefiting from the corresponding better image quality, or at 1/125 second instead of 1/15 second, and being able to rid of camera shake, or without a flash and therefore without harsh shadows.

Thank you! I've using the lens for over a week now, and it doesn't come of from my D90 at all. Great lens for the buck. I can't believe I didn't get one sooner! Strongly recommended!

Looks like my previous reply was lost....

The 50mm f/1.4, while a good lens, would be above the budget suggested in the OP.

I like the 70-300mm VR. It is a good upgrade from the ED version it replaced in Nikon's line up. It is a great vacation lens or any time I don't want to lug around the 70-200mm f/2.8.

Moose Peterson describes it as one of Nikon's best kept secrets.

Thanks for your reply. We plan on a 4 to 5 week Nat. Park trip next year and I wanted to add a longer lens in addition to the 18-200 MM. I can add a tele-convertor with the longer lens.

Thanks

If you can get a TC to work with the 70-300mm, it will probably need to be a non-Nikon one (Kenko?), if I remember correctly. The Nikon TCs usually do not mount with the variable aperture lenses due to there not being enough room between the lens's and TC's glass elements.

I'm a fan of the 35 f/1.8G too. It isn't my most flexible lens since it can't zoom, but some of my favorite photos have come from it.

If you find some spare cash between the seat cushions consider a long term goal of getting the f1.8 G primes to go with the 35. The 50 is great with even better resolving power than the twice as expensive 50 1.4. The real find of of the series is the 85 1.8G which is excellent by any measure and is 95% of what the famous Cream Machine 85 1.4 is for 1/4 the price. There is also a new 28 1.8G but it might not be as useful as these three;35, 50, 85. I know a lot of peope who gave up on mid zooms and shoot entirely with these great value 1.8G lenses.

Since we had a baby girl six weeks ago, I find myself exclusively using my primes. Never expected to get as much use out of the 35mm 1.8 as I have. It's become my go to lens with the baby.
