"Just Bought My First Camera - D80"

Hi All -

I just bought my very first camera - it's a used D80 from my brother in law for $200. I'm hoping that's a good deal. It came with a lens and body, I had to pick up a charger on ebay and I need to buy an SD Card.

My questions are:

1. Since I don't have a manual, is there a post lying around that I can access for reference/quick start?
2. Can I use a 32GB SanDisk Ultra Class 10 (30MB/s) SDXC Card with this camera?
3. Is there anything else I should consider buying?

Thank you!

Edit to add: It came with a 18-135mm lens.

Welcome to Nikonians, David.

What lens did you get? Sounds like a pretty good deal. There's heaps of info on this site.

I can't advise you on the SD card.

You'll soon enough discover the other things you 'need', without anyone telling you.

Cheers,
Suzy

Hi Suzy, it came with a 18-135mm lens. Is that any good?

Hi, welcome to Nikonians.

You did get a great deal on an amazing camera. As already stated the newer SD cards where not rated with the D80 they came out long after. Which is a good thing for you because the older SDHC are cheaper.

The D80 is a fine camera. Wish i still had mine as a back up. One tip i can give you is some D80's tended to overexpose by about a stop. So this could be something to look for. And you can set your exposure compensation to mitigate this if you find it a problem.

Your lens is a good one and will cover a nice range.

I agree with Marty, an 8GB is big enough for plenty of pictures and you can get a few for the cost of a 32GB one.

PDFs of manuals are usually available on Nikon's support site. Here's a link to the D80 manuals.

The D80 is an SDHC device, so only use SDHC cards in it. It's safer and will save you some money. The SDXC card might work, but the camera would format it as if it was an SDHC card and would not be able to take advantage of any speed or capacity improvements that SDXC offers.

Speculative buying is dangerous. You should use what you've got first and as Suzy said let that tell you what you may need. About the only "safe" extra purchase would be a card reader if you don't already have one and you don't have an SD slot on your computer.

Hi David,

Welcome to Nikonians!
Congratulations on your new D80.

I would recommend getting SDHC memory cards and limiting the capacity to about 8GB or so. The highest capacity card approved in the Manual is 4GB.

I would also recommend getting a quality Micorfiber lens cleaning cloth and a Giottos Rocket Blower.

Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
